Strengthening a Church's mission through purpose-driven creative.

Christ Community Church of the Nazarene is a Syracuse-area church centered on a simple mission: “Inspiring hope in our community through the love of Christ.”
I began attending Christ Community Church in the spring of 2025 after meeting the pastor at my local gym. Not long after joining, I felt a strong calling to become more involved and find ways to use the creative skills I had been developing throughout my career in service of the church.
What started as an opportunity to help creatively quickly became something much more meaningful.
By being present every week, volunteering at church functions and becoming actively involved in the life of the church, I was able to understand the mission in a way that would have been difficult from the outside. I experienced firsthand what makes Christ Community Church special: the relationships, the sense of belonging and the genuine emphasis on building community around Christ.
That perspective became the foundation for everything that followed.
Creating a Visual Identity Rooted in the Mission
As the church approached its 20-year anniversary, I saw an opportunity to modernize its visual identity while making sure the work remained deeply connected to who the church already was.
The goal was never to reinvent the organization. It was to create a stronger, more contemporary expression of its mission, one that could communicate more clearly and consistently across every touchpoint. That philosophy became a central part of the branding strategy I presented to church leadership.
I developed a refreshed logo and visual identity built around the three “C’s” within Christ Community Church.
The three circular forms intentionally move inward toward one another, representing Christ, Community and Church, while surrounding the cross at the center. The symbolism was designed to visually reinforce what I had come to experience personally: a church centered on Christ that brings people together in meaningful community.
Color became another intentional part of that story. The middle “C,” representing Community, is highlighted in a brighter blue and visually connected to the cross. The idea was simple but important: community is one of the church’s greatest strengths, and it is through Christ that the church seeks to inspire hope within it.
From there, I developed the broader visual system and explored how the identity could extend across digital experiences, apparel, signage and other applications. The goal was to create something recognizable, consistent and meaningful, while giving the church a visual foundation that could serve it well for years to come.
Rebuilding the Church's Digital Front Door
The refreshed identity naturally led into one of the largest parts of the project: completely redesigning and redeveloping the church website.
For a church hoping to grow its congregation and create a sustainable future, I viewed the website as much more than an informational resource. For many people considering visiting a church for the first time, the website is their first interaction with the organization.
It needed to feel current, welcoming and representative of what someone would actually experience when they walked through the doors on Sunday morning.
I researched a wide range of modern church websites to better understand how people explore churches digitally, what information is most important to a first-time visitor and what functionality could make the website more valuable to existing members.
From there, I developed the overall site architecture, designed every page and wrote the website copy.
I also built functionality that made the website useful well beyond the initial visit. Sunday sermons can be viewed directly through the site and organized by sermon series, creating an accessible archive of messages for both members and people discovering the church for the first time.
I developed a dynamic event system as well, allowing the church to continually showcase upcoming services, ministries, gatherings and community events without the site feeling static or outdated.
Today, I continue serving as the church’s webmaster, regularly updating content, events, sermons and other information so that the digital experience remains current.
Helping People Experience the Church Before They Visit
One of the most important decisions I recommended during the website process was bringing in a professional videographer to document what a Sunday at Christ Community Church actually feels like.
Photography and copy could explain the church, but I felt video could help someone experience it.
I recommended the investment to the church board and hired a videographer I had previously worked with professionally. I then helped establish the creative direction for the shoot, identifying the moments that were most important to capture.
That included aerial footage of the church and property, families arriving, conversations happening in the foyer, people connecting before the service, worship inside the sanctuary, the pastor delivering the message, small groups gathering and the wide range of people who make up the church community.
The goal was to show someone who had never attended Christ Community Church what it might feel like to walk through the doors.
That content became an important part of the redesigned website and helped bring the new visual identity to life with something even more powerful: the actual people behind it.
Results
The refreshed brand and website were warmly received by the church community and have helped strengthen the church’s presence as new members continue to walk through its doors.
This is one of the projects I am most proud of throughout my career because the work represents much more to me than a new logo or website.
It gave me an opportunity to take skills I have spent more than 15 years developing professionally and apply them to something I genuinely believe in.
Since joining Christ Community Church, my involvement has continued to grow beyond creative work. I regularly volunteer at church functions and now serve on the church board, giving me the opportunity to contribute to its future in ways that extend well beyond design and marketing.
The church’s long-term goal is to continue growing its congregation and building a sustainable future so it can reach more people and continue inspiring hope in the community through the love of Christ. The branding and website projects were well received in the church and we've seen new members walk through the door as a result.
My role has been to help make sure the way the church presents itself reflects the strength of the community that already exists within it.
For me, that is what made this project especially meaningful.
