Making a Credit Card Promotion Impossible to Ignore
Creative Direction | Copy
Sidney Federal Credit Union (SFCU) is a growing New York-based credit union that we had partnered with on several creative campaigns over the years. That relationship gave us the opportunity to continually push beyond traditional financial advertising and find more memorable ways to connect with their members.
For this campaign, SFCU came to our creative team with a clear business objective: increase Mastercard adoption.
They also had one creative request. They wanted their CEO to play a role in the campaign.
Rather than simply putting him in front of a camera to deliver a promotional message, we saw an opportunity to make him part of the entertainment.
Building the Campaign Around One Simple Idea
I led the overall creative direction for the campaign, working alongside our broader creative team to explore several concepts before landing on an approach built around humor, spontaneity and an unexpected use of SFCU's CEO.
The concept placed him out in public with a microphone, introducing the Mastercard promotion directly to people and getting them to think about what they might do with the extra money they could earn.
Those conversations then transitioned into exaggerated, dreamlike scenarios that brought those ideas to life. Instead of simply explaining the promotion, we turned the offer into a series of entertaining commercials that gave people a reason to watch.
A major part of my role was making sure the campaign itself remained incredibly easy to understand.
I developed the overarching headline: Spend $500. Earn $100.
It became the foundation for the entire campaign. The language was intentionally simple, direct and memorable, allowing the humor to carry the personality while the offer remained immediately understandable.
I also developed the supporting messaging and ad copy points and established the broader creative direction for how the campaign should look, feel and communicate.
From there, I worked closely with a designer and video producer to bring the concept to life across video and supporting ad campaign creative. It was a highly collaborative production, but one guided by a consistent idea: make the promotion simple enough to understand instantly and creative enough to remember afterward.
Results
The approach worked.
The campaign generated 539 new Mastercard accounts, representing 35% of all SFCU credit card openings for the entire year and a 188% increase compared with the same period the previous year.
What began as a straightforward credit card promotion became one of the organization's most successful acquisition campaigns.
The creative approach also received national recognition, earning a 2026 Diamond Award from America's Credit Unions in the Humor & Wit category.
For me, this project is a great example of the role creative direction can play in business performance.
We did not make the offer more complicated. We made the way people experienced it more interesting.
By combining a remarkably simple message with humor, an unexpected role for the CEO and a creative concept that could carry across multiple executions, we turned a traditional financial promotion into something people wanted to engage with.
And ultimately, the creativity did what it was supposed to do.
It got attention, made the offer memorable and drove measurable action.
